produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.
The Organic movement began in the early 1900’s as people became more interested in their health and the wellbeing of their communities, focusing on minimising the use of chemicals and pesticides in agriculture. Since then, the movement has grown to become a common and usually preferred choice of fruit, veggies and other produce around the world, with Australia having the largest organic agricultural area of 27.2 million hectares! (that’s big).
Organic living has become so popular that there’s now even a whole month dedicated to it which is nearly upon us: Organic September. This is hosted by The Soil Association and is designed to encourage more people to try Organic products, as a way to promote and educate people about organic food & farming practices. They say “Campaigning for more organic food and farming means that together, we can slow down climate change” – and we have to say, we agree.
Organic foods often have many more beneficial nutrients (such as antioxidants) than their conventionally grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or disappear altogether when they eat only organic foods, as there are less chemicals and additives that aggravate their intolerances.
If we don’t have the luxury of growing our own foods and we rely on the produce from our local supermarket shop, then really, we don’t have much insight into exactly what goes into or onto our food. If you’re focusing on eating healthier, then naturally you’ll be consuming more fruit, veggies and wholegrain. But if these fruits, veggies and grains are covered in chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers, then they could be having a detrimental effect on your health, body and the environment, which negates your healthy efforts to start with! Advocates say that not only is organic food safer, but it’s possibly more nutritious and better tasting than non-organic food. And it goes without saying that organic production is better for the environment and kinder to animals.
Not only is it important to pay attention to what’s going INTO our bodies, but also the products we use ON our bodies, such as moisturisers, shampoo and conditioner, oils, clothing and make up. Organic products are deemed to be much more beneficial for our skin, as there are little to no harsh chemical ingredients and they are much more natural. And organic cotton that is grown in subtropical countries such as India, Turkey and China from non-genetically modified plants, and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides, is a much healthier and kinder choice for your skin.
